3-5 seconds is longer than you think, I will agree. However
cranking that long ensures there is oil in most of the bearings.
An immediate start can subject the bearings to a lot of wear.
AJohn Deere 170 skid steer followed me home Wednesday. That old
Wisconsin takes a good 10-15 seconds of cranking to fire up if it
has been sitting for a day... Just a typical Wisconsin engine...
Thanks for the input guys, I think I'll stick to using the glow
plugs given the price of a quality battery these days. My tractor
starts really quickly, more like Che-che-che-vroom. I usually turn
the key to the on position, make a lap or two around the tractor
to check for stuck twigs etc, then start it
Best regards,

Pretty much agreed with Cecil, except, maybe, the
3-5 second rule of thumb. 5 seconds of cranking is actually a
LONG time. Think about it:
Che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-che-VRoooommm.
I'd probably cap it at 2-3 seconds myself. On the other hand,
"starts fine" is what Mike M said, so that's probably not an
extended cranking period. I guess the issue would be raw
diesel fuel washing the oil off the cylinder walls. That's a
concern, but I think it would take many years of abusive
starting to trash the engine.

Many of the newer eastern european tractors will start in

tractor will
states to use
the glow plugs when below 75deg. It does not need them at

always let it warm up a little before moving also...
