    Thanks for the input guys, I think I'll stick to using the glow
    plugs given the price of a quality battery these days. My tractor
    starts really quickly, more like Che-che-che-vroom. I usually turn
    the key to the on position, make a lap or two around the tractor to
    check for stuck twigs etc, then start it<br>

        I'd probably cap it at 2-3 seconds myself.  On the other hand,
        "starts fine" is what Mike M said, so that's probably not an
        extended cranking period.  I guess the issue would be raw diesel
        fuel washing the oil off the cylinder walls.  That's a concern,
        but I think it would take many years of abusive starting to
        trash the engine.
