I know that this is way late, but I thought I would post this anyway.<br />
I had a wonderful trip to Georgia to visit family. One of the greatest<br />
highlights of the whole trip was meeting up with Herb! My Uncle Kirk<br />
and I went down on Friday and got to meet both Herb and his Wife. Such<br />
wonderful people!<br />
Herb gave us a history lesson about the Allis tractors that he had at<br />
his place. My favorite was an Allis G that he had with a loader. I<br />
have never seen one of those loaders like that Herb. I did get a<br />
chance to share the history lesson with my grandfather also. He is 81,<br />
and has way more experience than I do with this old iron, and even he<br />
didn't know that they made a loader for a G. (I couldn't believe I<br />
knew something that he didn't). :)<br />
He also told us about the scale model he made. What a neat deal!Also<br />
was nice to listen to Herb talk about<br />
his gardens. That, too, would keep somebody busy.<br />
We also chatted about the time in the Navy that he served. One of the<br />
things I really enjoy most about these conversations is the<br />
opportunity to get so much history from the people who saw these<br />
things. History books only tell the story how the author chooses. The<br />
real way to hear the story is to chat with Herb's generation. Sadly,<br />
the younger generation of folks don't take some time to do that.<br />
(Except a few of us). Instead, they are worried about their cell<br />
phones, video games, etc.<br />
<br />
My family down there and I decided that we would try to make this an<br />
annual vacation, (to have Tyler come visit), and I hope that we can<br />
make the visit with Herb and his wife an annual event on that<br />
vacation. It was sure fun to finally meet someone in person from the<br />
list! :)<br />
