It is with a very heavy heart that I have to let you know that one of our founding list members, Herb Metz, passed away last Saturday.

He was on our mailing list within the first year and has been a steady influence to the list and a good friend the entire time. My dad and he, as it turned out, served together in the seventh fleet during the Korean war.  My dad was on the aircraft carrier, and Herb was on one of the destroyers(IIRR).  One of his favorite stories to tell me was how the aircraft carrier (USS Coral Sea) nearly sunk them with a near miss one moonless night when they were doing lights-out practice maneuvers.

I am sad, but I am comforted by knowing he’s in his richly deserved reward now and I’m sure his soul is at peace.

He went home in his sleep Saturday night at 95 years of age. He had requested no services and the family has honored his request.
