It is both rewarding and frustrating to attempt to work with the local FFA 4H groups. Several years ago I made a proposal to the local all color tractor club that we sponsor a few HS members to help them compete in the National FFA Tractor Restoration competition. The club whole heartedly endorsed the idea with offers to allow use of our shop as needed, with help from members on restoration questions and parts help as needed., A complete commitment by the club. So then we went to the local High School and several FFA members expressed sincere and active interest in the program. Then the bureaucracy got involved. The local High School and been recently built for a nice tidy sum of $27 Million. But.....there had been no provision for a students shop in this new HS. So the students would need to do all their work in our Clubs shop, This was completely acceptable to us and in fact we thought we could be more helpful that way, Then came along a complete cancelation of the program because the HS insurance didn't cover off campus work. From our perspective it became political nightmare with the local schools district trying to cover their rear end for not having a shop. The whole program fell apart. A few years later we learned that the local HS was now busing students to another larger HS for trade related shop projects and learning programs. They must have been pressured to provide trade related school programs and to solve the insurance issues. Fortunately in the last couple of years trade programs in HS have become a necessity as the population is realizing that student are comping out of college with no earning power. I wonder how many High Schools such as ours have had to add facilities to support the trade school needs Its actually a sad state of affairs.

Great and heart-warming story, indeed!
We live in a small rural community in Minnesota. Grandson is in high school here and engaged with 4H and FFA. Both are active concerns and have large participation. And both provide great opportunities to work on projects and to develop leadership skills. There are always nicely restored tractors at the county and state competitions. Families are actively engaged with the kids' projects. The quality of the kids' peers is outstanding. I contrast this with what I observe with the big city schools, we got an inside look at that with a godson in a Minneapolis suburb a few years back and he tells me it has gone further downhill badly since then. These local, small town kids will have a fantastic head start when they get out in the world. And yes, grandson has tractor projects albeit the wrong color: he's currently working on an early Oliver 70 and a Farmall MD.

I second that John. Definitely good to see a young people do this project.
The before picture in that article tells the story. While reasonably straight and complete they obviously had their work cut out for for them. I’ve have adult employees that could not see a project that size to completion.
“Congrats Annika” wherever you are.
