I didn’t grow up on a farm but in the country in a small development. Our local school wasn’t very big by Iowa standards (my graduating class had under 70 students). I got involved in FFA mainly because a couple of my close friends were in it.

The Ag instructor (as it was labeled then) took us to hog judging events (I learned on the bus ride what to look for) where I won a ribbon. We did mock buying and selling of futures in another class. I took welding and small engine mechanics. I was elected an officer and became president by my senior year. Many parliamentary procedure competitions over that time as well. I’m convinced I learned as much if not more in that small classroom than I did in the rest of the curriculum of that time.

Seeing this article and video that started this conversation gives me hope that there is still some of those hands-on learning being done out there in places. I’m in awe of the job that young lady did. I’m also impressed by her neighbor who so graciously helped mentor along the way. With all the world events it’s nice to have a good story to read about now and then.

Thanks for sharing, everyone!
Brad

Great and heart-warming story, indeed!

We live in a small rural community in Minnesota. Grandson is in high school here and engaged with 4H and FFA. Both are active concerns and have large participation. And both provide great opportunities to work on projects and to develop leadership skills. There are always nicely restored tractors at the county and state competitions. Families are actively engaged with the kids' projects. The quality of the kids' peers is outstanding. I contrast this with what I observe with the big city schools, we got an inside look at that with a godson in a Minneapolis suburb a few years back and he tells me it has gone further downhill badly since then. These local, small town kids will have a fantastic head start when they get out in the world. And yes, grandson has tractor projects albeit the wrong color: he's currently working on an early Oliver 70 and a Farmall MD.

I second that John. Definitely good to see a young people do this project.

The before picture in that article tells the story. While reasonably straight and complete they obviously had their work cut out for for them. I’ve have adult employees that could not see a project that size to completion.

“Congrats Annika” wherever you are.
