Hi, Gene!

Let me open this reply to you by noting that I have NOT done this job to my '51 A (which is much different from the '49 A). I have been into the transmission of my '49 about 100 (One Hundred) years ago. I have been into the transmission of my '47 B, which IS very similar to the '51 A, but only shallowly. I *do* have the A parts book in front of me (If you don't have one yet, get one).

A quick glance shows that the stick itself and associated parts are identical to the '49 A, but the shift quadrant is, of course, much different. Looking at my tractor and the manual, the steering shaft will have to at least come forward out of the pedestal, and the pedestal will have to come off. Then, the quadrant can come off, bringing the stick with it. THEN you can take the transmission case cover off. OR you can take the quadrant/case cover assembly off as a unit, which will be heavy but the path I would recommend (NOT having done it on the A before but having done the very similar B).

If I understand what I have read about the transmissions correctly, 2 & 4 are on the same shaft, so your problem is likely localized. It may be a bad bearing on that shaft or on its counter-shaft, allowing one or the other to slip out of place. Let me encourage you again to get the parts manual and the B service manual (Deere never did one for the A, but they are so similar that you should be able to muddle through with it).

Anywho, I hope this helps, and please feel free to replace any advice I give with that of someone who knows more than I do!

This was good reading. My 51 A shifter won?t go into 2nd or 4th. Do I need to take the steering shaft out to raise the cover high enough to work on what ever is sticking? Thanks for any and all advise you have for me.
