I think I haven't received some of the ATIS messages but if the teeth are only worn off a 1/4" in places on the flywheel the starter Bendix should still engage in that area. Buying a replacement ring gear is not a big deal and replacing it isn't either as Brian has mentioned. But.... I wouldn't replace the ring gear without also rebuilding the starter and Bendix. My guess is the Bendix spring isn't as strong as it should be to drive the Bendix gear into the ring gear. Not engaging aggressively enough will eventually wear the teeth on the ring gear which yours obviously shows. Look at the teeth on the Bendix gear. I think you will find it is in bad shape just like the ring gear.
