[AT] Local sawmill with huge inventory

Dean, what you are seeing at the mills has been going on since the end of WW II. The government’s efforts at rebuilding Japan escalated into a regular market causing a constant stream of lumber going to the far East. That market is now, of course, dominated by China. My family were wholesale building materials distributors and sort of specialized in west coast lumber for the middle Tennessee area. I grew up listening to complaints about how our lumber prices were determined by whatever they were paying at any given time. My wife and I took an Alaska cruise in 1990 and saw shiploads of lumber in each port we visited, all going to that Eastern market.

There are now reports of timber thefts here. The tree of choice is white oak. White oak is primarily used for making whiskey barrels. Demand is surging.

Steve,

This isn’t that complex relative to Sum Ting Wong. With the current demand outstripping supply here in the NW sawmills can name their price which would be far and away exceeding any contractual price they have with overseas customers. The SUM Ting Wong problem is the lack of Greed. Or loyalty to local NW customers who will pay more.

If I'm the owner of that sawmill and the Chinese are outbidding domestic buyers, I'm probably taking the Capitalist route and selling to the highest bidder. Not that I have any real idea what's going on, but I'm just running off the K.I.S.S. principle, and that makes sense to me. Not sure what kind of conspiracy would have to be playing out if there's Sum Ting Wong.

You may recall I recently was stunned to see more inventory of cut lumber at a local saw mill than I had seen in years. It just totally was inconsistent with the lumber shortage vs demand driving up prices of lumber by unheard of percentages. Well, I learned a little bit more about this inventory of lumber. It is not for domestic consumption. It is headed for China. How does that float your boat? It really, really **&^%#'s me off. Sum ting Wong.
