You don't need to to charge it but I always do to see what the high side pressure is.

Do you even need to connect to the high side?  I thought common practice 
these days is to just watch the low side pressure when charging.

I went to add freon to my Big Belarus this morning.  The high side
connector would not connect.  No matter how hard I pushed on the
connector it would not go on far enough to connect with the groove.   I
had to replace the freon a couple of years ago when the tractor was
split, but I don't remember having any problems. The connectors I use
are the ones that attach then screw the knob at the end to depress the
schrader valve and connect..
