There will more than likely be a new normal. A lot of companies are realizing that they can have their employees work from home and get the job done. If they continue this trend it means that they won’t need big office buildings, so they’ll be down sizing their facilities. That in turn means large office buildings will start to become less desirable. They’ll also save on the utility costs associated with large offices. Then there’s the fact that the employers won’t have to carry expensive insurance policies to cover their butts because employees get hurt on the job, like falling down the stairs, or out of their desk chair. With more people working from home, commuting habits will change. Less crowded freeways, commuter trains, etc. Of course this all depends on how many companies will continue this trend.

All three of my kids currently work from home and their employees have indicated no interest in ending it.

I remember a time when computers were expected to change the future, with people working from home, buying and paying without money (online stores and credit cards), attending meetings around the world without traveling, seeing a doctor without leaving home, etc. Maybe this will become the next step in that forecast.

Long term effects?  Maybe, but at 71 maybe I am not as concerned as I would be at 41.  Extra fast development speed was a true concern.  But, these first two approved for emergency use a totally different approach than prior vaccine developments used.  Messenger RNA technology is somewhat new but is able to be extremely targeted to features found only in the SARS covid 2 beasts chat cause COVID-19.  95% of long term vaccine complications show up in the first two months of testing.  I'm naturally very conservative regarding these issues but think that a highly efficient vaccine is the only thing that will get our lives back to normal and we want it ASAP.

Getting vaccinated does not mean that the virus will disappear, it is in the environment and will be forever. Viruses on everyday surfaces don’t die because you were vaccinated. Getting vaccinated only means that you won’t get sick from it, or won’t get as sick. The yearly flus come and go twice a year, this one seems to stick around all year. The flus migrate around the globe as seasons and ambient conditions change, it’s not that they totally die off during certain times of the year. There was a diagram somewhere that showed how viruses move around the globe as seasons change. Once the virus is under control, we will probably fall into the misbelief that we eradicated it, but that will be the same misbelief we have about viruses like small pox and a host of other viruses. We were vaccinated against them, but every now and then a case shows up somewhere in the world. I believe there was a case of small pox a year or two ago somewhere in a mid-western state.

 There will be those who will refuse to get vaccinated, may get the virus and not have any symptoms, and will become spreaders. How long they will be spreaders hasn’t been addressed yet, so it simply could be until they’re diagnosed the next time they need medical attention, or maybe a lifetime. 

Another question that I don’t think has been addressed is whether we will need to get vaccinated every year like we do for the everyday flus. And what if the virus keeps mutating? How long will the current vaccine be effective?

A lot to learn before we’re totally out of the woods, or at least near the edge of the woods.

Keep in mind that the vaccines require a 2nd dose to achieve proper immunity.   The need for the second dose complicates the scheduling.

In any case, my wife has been urged by her doc NOT to get the vaccine, at least not yet.  There remain too many unanswered questions about interactions with some drugs and her autoimmune disorders.

To assume that we all get a magic shot and everything is all better is unrealistic.  We'll be living with the repercussions of this disease for a long time, alas!

On a positive note, I haven't seem to have caught any of the ailments my old JDs have--I'm not rusting, and I'm not dented, and I'm not faded.  Of course, I do have a little trouble getting started from time to time . . . .  Hmmmmm.

Oh, and there's that compulsion to spend money on them.
