Yeah it's overkill but it's what he had on hand. Pretty smart I'd say.

I don't think I can find the photos, but you should see what I built to
hold up my 20ft Grady White boat a few years ago to repaint the bottom.
Necessity is the mother of invention and strong or stacked timbers are
never the wrong answer.
