Yes, hand starting was the only option for starting the gas 60 when they
were built.  The exposed flywheel had holes in it to turn it over with a
bar.  Plenty of YouTube videos of it being done.

According to Cat, they made a kit to convert a Cat 60 to diesel. Could the
gasoline version be hand started?
