A lot of Amish are working in light construction. They hire non-Amish to drive them where they need to go and to provide them with a cell phone. This means fewer are working in self-employed shops. I have even encountered them doing inside sales at supply houses.

They are less opposed to diesel ic engines. Could you belt power a shoe machine from a line shift and power the line shaft from a small diesel? The shoe repair trade seems to be pretty diminished with a lot of new shoes molded rather than stitched.

[Indiana Robinson] <snip> There is an Amish shoe shop not far  from here that the last I knew was still using a big old Landis out-sole stitcher that was still driven by a set of bicycle pedals. The operator sat on the seat and pedaled it which would be tricky because guiding the shoe / boot takes about 3 hands itself. <snip>
