[AT] Right to repair

Thanks for the heads up. So far every thing I’ve dealt with on my ecodiesel was warranty or recall so I have not hooked my scanner to mine. In fact, I gave my scanner to my son last winter who got a “new to him” 2002 Ford expedition. When I go to buy another one I will definitely look for support for the ecodiesels.

This superset of capabilities is not available on most scanners “out of the box” except professional high-end ones. For instance for my scanner I had to buy the Ford program to get more complete information about engine parameters and statistics for my F350. I had to buy the Volkswagen program to work on my Jetta and Golf, etc. I doubt any scanner would have handled diagnosing his speed sensor without buying the Chrysler upgrade for his scanner. Even then they aren’t magic and don’t necessarily poll, or meaningfully poll, every single sensor and device.

It works on my vehicle from the early nineties, my vehicle from the early oughties (as in 01), and a vehicle from the early twenty teens. I wonder if the scanner would have pointed to the speed sensor before and after replacement. I wonder if the manual contains enough information to allow you to test the sensor in or out of the circuit?

I did some studying and decided that it was the input speed sensor. I bought a new one and put it in. Zip, no change. OK, I was wrong. I took it to a busy mechanic friend and told him the things I had checked and about the new speed sensor not helping. I've known him since he first started and have used him for electronics problems a number of times. He is one of the good guys, always treated me well and while he is not free :-) he has always been fair. (He has retired now dang it. His son-in-law took over and I won't take anything to him.) Anywho... He called a bit later and he found that the new speed sensor was defective... He changed it and charged me but it was reasonable. No other problems. I had about strained my brain looking at stuff... I had even done a fluid and filter change just to get in there to look at stuff. It has done well in the years since. We have traveled in it quite a bit.
