The (White) Freightliner became the best selling truck in the US based on lower costs due in part to less costly and inferior parts. Early on they had a reputation for poor quality with nicknames like (White) “Road Commode” and “Freight Shaker”.
I have been to one of there plants when working as a chassis engineer for an oil field service company, and they were starting some quality programs. Today there quality has increased significantly. They still do not have a reputation of being the best, but they are getting better.
