 If I remember correctly, a Keen Sert also uses a regular size bolt tap.  No special tools required.  I agree with Steve on the sealing of the threads.  Very strong installation.David

I would opt for a KeenSert myself. Those are a solid insert that keys 
into place. A helicoil would likely work but the solid insert would be a 
better option as far as sealing the exterior.
