[AT] Battery cables

Those are some downright fine-looking cables. As a longtime “infrastructure” guy, I’m tempted to order a set for each of my tractors on general principle… :)

Cables came in. Look great but shop time is at a premium these days so I’ll have to wait to report on the installation.

That may be one of the most often forgotten things about tractor (and any other vehicle) electrics - the ground cable is a current-carrying wire.

Just keep in mind that the battery ground cable needs to be of equal conductive quality to achieve full efficiency. All JD two Cylinder tractors were positive ground.

Just 1.5’ and 1’. And Cecil. I didn’t try to get a price on cable but the website was super easy for putting in the specs on the custom cables. In fact, I just got an email that said they completed the cables and I already have a tracking number. So pretty fast too.

Sounds almost suspiciously inexpensive. Copper ain't cheap these days and 2/0 has a lot of it. How long are these cables Spencer?

Thanks Dean,

Looks like you had done some pretty good research. I checked around at a few of my usual places and the gauge was either unspecified or number two. I went with 2/0 for these custom tables instead of 0 because the routing doesn’t really require a lot of bends so I figured what the heck: I can beef up the copper. So that $33 and some change included using 2/0 wire.

There are quite a few aftermarket Battery Cable makers that sell the JD AM349T or AT10252 Battery cable in 0 Gauge in the $16 to $20 range. $26 including shipping on eBay. Don’t know the quality or the shipping cost on some but I wouldn’t think it would be all that bad. These are all 0 gauge. There are the Steiners and less reputable aftermarket suppliers that are selling 2 gauge under the same part number for in the $13 range plus shipping cost. JD sells an unknown gauge AT10252 cable for $52 so a price of around $25 to $30 is probably about right. JD owns A&I Parts and they sell the cable for $13 in some unknown gauge. But bottom line $25 to $30 including shipping seems to fit most of the 0 Gauge suppliers.

So all this discussion of battery cables made me look a little closer at the new 6 V battery cables I purchased for the 430V. I was shocked to find that Napa no longer sells 6 V battery cables in zero gauge. They are actually a number two now. What a bunch of cheapskates.

So I decided to make my own as discussed. But the supplies were kind of pricey. I was looking at nearly $40-$50 for cable, terminals, lugs, shipping, tax, etc. I figured there had to be somebody that makes cables cheaper than I can build them. None of the battery places in town do it anymore.

Being near the coast I know there’s a lot of businesses that make battery cables for marine environments. So I started checking around on some of the boating and sailboating places. Found a place in Georgia.

The website is genuinedealz.com <http://genuinedealz.com> . They make battery cables that are tinned for marine environments (and tinning is probably pretty handy for farm environments too) and cheaper than I can make them. And you can specify adhesive lined shrink tubing - which I did. Got a set on order. $33 after shipping and tax.
