There are one man shops who may do the job flat rate for a lower hourly amount. The one man makes more per hour and you pay less per hour without the overhead.

25 years ago I can remember changing out the slipping transaxle on an 84 Cavalier convertible I had. I did the job in my driveway. I added and removed pieces of wood to shim the transaxle down to remove and up to install. It took all of a rainless Saturday and part of Sunday. The whole job including the salvage yard transaxle cost less than $100.00. Although my daily driver, one of the other cars in the drive was availble as a backup if I did not finish on time. You might need to do essentially the same to expose the rear of the crankshaft. You would still need to change the leaking rear crankshaft seal while the transaxle was off.

A great looking car but made during GM's quality trough bottom.

[Mike M] Hi Cecil, the job is rated at 16 hours, and that's for a certified mechanic with a lift. I wouldn't even know where to start, I'm handy, but not that handy.

[ Cecil Bearden] Have you looked at what is involved in replacing that seal? Usually the engine and trans is in a "cradle" you raise the body off of it and then separate the transmission from the engine. If you are physically able to do it, it might not be that big of a job.... Cecil
