That is a “special” D8 that Caterpillar made in the 1950s for use in the Arctic (Greenland mainly) and the Antarctic. It’s a Low Ground Pressure LGP-D8. As well as wide tracks, they also had the track length increased substantially by moving the engine forward from the rest of it.

This picture from that page shows the increased length of them with the gap between the engine and the cab.



They have all been removed from Antarctica now, replaced by Challengers and Case IH 4 track machines
