[AT] Antonio Carraros on Jaxkass Hill was A new one

My recollections of any discing that was done in the vineyards around the winery were all with a straight, single row disc. I believe that whatever cover crop was planted at the same time. Most of the mowing was replaced with sheep. Now that I with Gallo I’ll see what they do after harvest, rapidly approaching. Definitely different Deeres than what TWE used, 6430s there, here I saw a 5101 en, and a 5093 en. I looked them up and they appear to be identical. I couldn’t find a difference between them at Tractor Data. Same motor, tranny, hydraulics, narrow, years. Just different model numbers. Flat lands, no hills.

I left a comment that the John Deere seems kind of light for the task. I think a Cat D2 would be better. I farmed similar slopes with one for years. I have never used a tandem disc like that. I see little sign of ridging. I think they must cross disc up and down later. It would be interesting to see what one of those new ones would do.

I wonder if the Antonio Carraros would outperform the JD420 with trailing disc on Jackass Hill. The tread angle on the rubber tread may offer more resistance to sliding laterally down the hill that the straight steel cleats. The trailing disc seemed to have more resistance to lateral sliding when the concave side was pointing downhill.

[Bradford] I talked with my friend again about the Antonio Carraros. They purchased two. $140K so whoever it was that guessed 150 wasn't that far off. For use in the hilliest of their vineyards near Calistoga, CA. Apparently barely passable if wet. The one thing she did say after driving one is that it's pretty cramped. Tough for a fat old guy like me. Guess they wouldn't go for a couple of 40C or the like. 

[ James Peck] Later sixties I saw the Hocking River straightened and channelized around Athens, Ohio. They used cable operated pan scrapers pulled by steel tracked Caterpillars. Cat did not design the rubber treaded Challengers for construction work.
