My dad talkked of using coal oil (Kerosene) as winter coolant in his 
John Deere D. One day it was so cold and must have been
summer weight coal oil (was there such a thing?) and it geled in the 
radiator stopping  flow causing an overheat situation. I think he used
to get the engine started first, then pour in the coal oil.
