[AJD] IGNITION advice needed

Ron,

I would recommend overhauling the Mag if the owner will foot the bill. Otherwise inserting a resistor in the coil circuit is worth a try. Sounds like the coil is getting hot and causing an intermittent loss of connection. It may be damaged to the point that it needs to be replaced with a resistor coil. I hate half assed mods. Nothing but trouble and it is hard to figure out what actually has been modified and if it has been done properly. I don’t remember right now when JD changed from using Magneto’s to Distributors but JD’s first Wico Distributors were a POS. I also don’t remember what the ohm value of the resistor needs to be but I do know it needs to be high wattage. I suppose this info is in one of JR Hobbs books or in the Service bulletins but I don’t have time to go look right now. The boss has me on a deadline right now. Get er done or else.

Subject: [AJD] IGNITION advice needed

A friend brought me an A John Deere with carburetor problems. He wanted me to get it running right for him. The carb was no problem and the tractor runs decent until it shuts off unexpectedly. Sometime in the past, someone has converted the WICO mag to operate like a distributor. This is a 1948 model, so it is 12-volt. It is using an external coil that is not internally resisted. Just a hot 12-volt source from a switch to the coil. It gets hot. Will this set up work alright if I put a resistor in the system or get an internally resisted coil? If it were mine, I would put a distributor on it and it would be fine. Or overhaul the mag so it would work.
