    All manuals from older machines recommend to remove the chain and soak 
in a bucket of oil. But who puts up with that kind of mess? maybe soak it 
during the off season and hang up to drip dry till needed.

I wouldn't expect most attempts to lubricate a chain to make a
difference. You need the lube inside, but you are putting it on the
outside.
