Spencer, a thought about the carb.  You might have already considered this,
but I'll mention it anyway.  Worn butterfly shafts and bushings will create
oddities at idle, such as hunting.  You have a double-whammy of a slightly
indeterminate butterfly position plus a potential vacuum leak.
