[AT] hyd cylinder different inlet threads?

I had to buy a replacement hydraulic cylinder.  Every one I've ever had had 1/2" pipe threads.  When I tried to put my hose on, I couldn't get the treads to start... then I looked closer.  WAY smaller.  The plastic shipping plug had a O-ring, doesn't look like tapered pipe threads.  
Sigh, this wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't 20 miles one way.
