Oh no! I'm glad you didn't get hurt worse!
Maybe you need to replace that pipe plug with a ball valve
and paint the handle Bright Pink or something. grins.

Just a short note to let the world know how stupid we as humans can be at
times .On saturday march 11th , I had a little gathering at my home / shop
to have a crawfish boil ( 500 lbs ) , 20 racks of pork ribs , 40 lbs.
catfish along with fries and all the trimmings . Photos enclosed if your
interested , just click on the link . As in the past years , all of the
children and grownups can`t hardly wait till about 2pm to start and run the
old ( 105 years old ) 20 hp Bessemer engine . As in the past , I have been
trying to teach some of the younger folks to get it ready to start ( oil ,
heat hot tube & hook up propane bottle ) and when it is ready , I work the
air valve to roll it over and control the fuel valve . To make a long
story short , it did not want to run , it would try , BACKFIRE , run a few
rounds on its on then quit . After about 10 minutes , it backfired back
into the air starting tank and blew the air hose off giving me the worst
whipping I`v had in a many years , BETWEEN my leggs . After the second time
doing this , it was getting to be serious business so we quit . Monday the
13th after doing a lot of thinking , I finally figured out WHY it wouldn't
run . They failed to REMOVE the 2" pipe plug on the air intake side so the
engine couldn't get any fresh air . Plug is there to keep out bees and
anything else when just sitting up . I think there is a short video of the
hose coming off and giving me my first whipping . I have since made up a
startup check list which I should of had in the beginning .
