Opps reading your original post I see that your plug is solid.
Still you can drill it through the center almost to the top and
then cross drill it, so that the holes intersect.  Drill the vertical
hole large enough that you won't have trouble hitting it with the
cross drill.

Thanks Cecil, my plug is a solid plug with no hollow area in it. I'll 
drill it length wise and try the cotter pin idea.
