[AT] OT- Cornwell Tools

Warren, That's where the credit and status angles come in.
IF your SIL is willing to push high interest rate financing on
his buddies he can make it. I don't think many young mechanics
are paying cash for their tools. The deal is, in the auto shops today
there are so many specialized tools that you won't ever find at a yard
sale. The techs in the shops work based on a book price. If the book
says it takes 5 hours to replace the water pump on a car that is how much
the dealership charges and how they get paid. If they can use a specialty
tool and get the job done in 3 hours and get on to the next customer they
are
literally doubling up on their income. If the tool truck comes by and has
that
tool they really don't care what it costs. That's the way that business
works.
He'll be selling convenience, credit, warranty, and his personality. If he
can do
that and their isn't someone else with another brand that is already buddied
up to
his customer base he can do well. Otherwise, not so much.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Just to re-state: This is my son in law
making this decision, not me.

I'd done my research on the tools and understand they are good, quality
tools- some of the last still made in USA. My concern comes from statistics
such as 30% bankruptcy rate for tool-truck businesses, which is quite high.
I also have doubts about his ability to get out and sell himself as he has
not shown this ability to date.

Just normal father-in-law concerns since it is a considerable investment.

It is a little reassuring to hear from you guys that at least the product
is a good one, and that several of you knew of long time successful
operators. He has close connections with two of the local trade schools
mechanics shops, and thinks this will gain him access to a pipeline of
incoming potential customers. My opinion is the young starting mechanics
are going to be visiting swap meets and pawn shops to build their starting
collections- not buying off a tool truck.

I guess time will tell.

Thanks again,
Warren
