Thanks, people. This group pointed me the right direction to find the answer to the question.  Bottom line: It really is a greeting or well-wish meant in all sincerity by either sex.  The letters I am working with span a period of several years.  The whole community of contemporaries knew each other very well and corresponded with each other for nearly a decade and reminisced about the old times almost 30 years later. Several of the people ended up being part of my family tree and this cache of letters has now been passed down several generations.  Most are written in pencil and not readable without help. I anticipate storing each in its current condition, as a high-contrast image (so it is easily read), and as a word processed document stored in PDF so the collection is searchable.
