I've been all over northern Arizona, but never Phoenix. So possibly I can't help you directly. But I will say all the places I've been in Arizona have been incredibly interesting. One of the most beautiful sights that I've seen in my entire life was waking up in a van (of fellow college students going to the Grand Canyon on spring break). I woke up in the morning after my shift of driving, near Flagstaff and the desert was covered in snow. In my 55 years I don't think I've seen too many other more beautiful things. You might want to just take in nature in the area of you run out of rusty alternatives. I spent some time in the northeast in Kinuente(spelling??) and other Navajo areas. Some hardscrabble living but some interesting geography and people.

PS: I was about 50 miles from Phoenix in the middle of nowhere about 10 years ago. Its the only time I've driven a car over 100 miles an hour :-)
