[AT] now Power Steering

The key to “add on” power steering is sensing when to send oil to the cylinders.
I have see some vehicles that have some torque sensing valve in the steering box area that puts oil to the cylinder when it senses torque on the steering shaft. I think that this was some spring mechanism that activated a valve when the rotary force caused the spring to move. When the force stopped, the spring would go back to a centered position and stop oil flow to the cylinder.
I recall other mechanisms that did similar with a valve mechanism on 1 end of the steering cylinder. Pushing or pulling this one end would cause springs to compress it retract and open up ports for oil to flow.

The Char-Lynn (or Ross) systems replaced the mechanical steering shaft with “torque generator” unit that caused flow to the steering cylinder to move it. When the pump was working, the “torque generator” had some sensing valve that would direct oil from the pump to the cylinder, or if the pump was not working the steering wheel would cause this device to act like a manual pump and direct oil to the cylinder.

To add power steering to a tractor you will either need to find one of the valves that direct oil to the steering cylinder, or you should replace the steering shaft with a hydraulic “torque generator” type of system.

Remember discussion some months back about double rod end cylinders. Power steering systems are a place where these are the best option.

Good Luck and
Merry Christmas,

Dennis

I think Herb is talking about a Char-Lynn Torque Generator. It's a
way to put power steering on a non-power steering tractor. I drove a
M Farmall once with one and you could drive it with a finger......

I think Char-lynn also offered an add on power steering for tractors.
Pictures I've see it just spliced into the steering shaft and had two
hydraulic hoses going to the pump. I probably have a picture of the ad
somewhere. Not sure if would work on an "N" Ford though.
