         The winding wires in an electric motor or generator
are insulated with a thin coat of lacquer.  If it wasn't there
they would short circuit and the motor wouldn't run.

I've can't ever recall encountering a flywheel magnet or a magnet inside
a magneto that was coated---must be a reason.
