Maybe you guys have had this problem before.   My wife's 2003 Dodge 
caravan broke the bolt that holds the liftgate strut.  It looks like it 
was a stud spot or friction welded to a plate that is spot welded from 
the back side of the Door pillar.  If I could get to the back side, I 
would drill out the plate and install a bolt from the back side.  The 
problem is due to our rough roads as it is the right side.
