These were interesting engines. The popularity of these were largely due to there horsepower to weight ratio being lower than other engines. They were 2 cycle engines instead of the normal 4 cycle engines which gave them that better weight advantage. The common truck engine was a 318 HP 8V-71 for many years. ( 8 cylinders at 71 cubic inches per cylinder). In there peak they had over half of the truck engine market in the US. There were also 4-71, 6-71, 4-53, and 6V-53 engines, in smaller medium duty trucks and buses. Later the 6V-92T replaced the 8V-71, and the 8V-92T became the high power GM truck engine. For years these GM engines were used in the oilfield by most companies. Cat and Cummins started displacing some GM engines in the oilfield.
For loud, were had some GM 12V-149T frac pump engines running straight pipes on the exhaust. The only engine that was louder was the old Allison airplane engines converted to frac pump engines.
Due to there nature of being 2 cycle engines, they were the first casualty of emission regulations. GM finally came out with there 60 series engine, and the smaller 50 series, but these never had the same success as the old 2 cycle engines. Think they are still around, and they are good engines.
Another casualty of emissions was Cat vehicular engines. Cat took a gamble of some new technology for reduced emissions, and lost the gamble. They dropped out of the vehicular market for a few years, and just got back in a few years back with Cat engines in a Cat branded truck designed for "vocational" type duty such as dumps, cement mixers, cranes, etc. I have not seen any Cat brand "tractors" that pull semi trailers.
