I don't think there is a gearbox on a 1240 (I'm pretty certain that is
the model we had). I know dad said the first 4 row Deere the family had
used a gearbox. As far as I know the 1240 used a bunch of sprockets. You
may be able to pull up a parts book on Deere's website and check for
some of he common wear items to see if they share any parts.
I will say this, you won't find any aftermarket parts for planters
that old. I searched 3 years for a 4 row planter and finally settled on
a 800 IH. During this time I found that if the planter was built before
1980, parts had to come from the dealer.
