Greg,

A simple check of spark is to get some spark plug and ground the case to the block. Crank engine and watch the spark. You can power it from the coil or distributor. If it a good spark, that should rule out MOST spark issues, except timing and heat related failure of electronics, which you cub should not have except for a condenser.
Generally timing issues are not intermittent, especially on older engines with mechanical timing and advance.
