The hydraulic cylinder does the work that had to be done with "the Big
Stick" shifting between ranges and squeezing the respective hydraulic
clutches on the older mostly smaller tractors AC built.

Not really sure, I don't think it has a real clutch and pressure plate, it
is a hyd piston.  I will have to consult the manual.
