hi Al,  I vaguely remember that but can't tell you a name.
I actually think we got close to $8 a pound when they finally
bought it out but as you said earlier they cut the allotments by
so much (2/3's or more) before they bought it that there wasn't much
left to buy.

Charlie, who was the US Senator that wanted to buy the allotment out
in the 80s, maybe early 90s for $8 a pound?  He was a Midwestern
Senator but I can't remember his name.  My dad didn't farm tobacco
after the late 60s but kept his allotment until the end.  I heard him
say many times that if senator so-and-so would get him $8 a pound, he
would happily sell!  (I also find it ironic that Jesse Helms didn't do
more to help the allotment holders' situation than he did, but I'd
better not open that can of worms! ;)  )
