Basically they are a small salamander heater with a heat exchanger on
the output side. Controlled by either a timer (heat comes on for a set
time then off for a set time) A thermostat or a simple switch,
Off/Fan/Heat. The fuel pump is easy to find at many RV/truck shops or
online for 50 bucks or so.

Inside the heater there will be a couple sensors just like on a furnace,
one that shuts it down if it gets to hot and one that keeps the blower
running until the heat exchanger cools down. Also a speed control board
that controls the fan/pump speeds.

Just looked and there is a complete D2 unit on fleabay for 300-400.00
item #252262287779

NEW D1 with all parts (except timer/thermostat/switch) #121857446354
