Looks like you could easily convert it. The adapter plate thickness can
be made up using a ring of aluminum the same thickness as the plate
between part 27 and the flywheel.
From that diagram it looks like you could basically pick any engine
that would fit in place of the 2.3. Just make an adapter plate to hold
it centered on the air pump drive.
Another possibility would be to add a clutch in there. Replace the
entire coupler assembly. From the diagram it looks like they use a
standard flywheel on the engine. Part 27 bolts into the holes that a
pressure plate normally goes. Part 25 bolts to part 22 and takes the
place of a clutch plate.
You might just take a look and see if a pinto clutch would fit in there,
you might need to make a hub adapter to make the splines work and use a
hydraulic throw out bearing. Might be easier to get it up and running.
