Cecil it's probably not sand though it no doubt looks and feels like it.
There is a lot of talk about what you found on boating forums and the
consensus is it is something that settles and crystallizes or reacts with
tanks out of the wonderful gasoline we have these days.

Sounds like you have the fix in sight regardless of what it is.
