Thanks, everyone.  I agree the 12V isn't really to blame for the
starter/ring gear issues, seems much more likely to be a result of the
tractor being 60-some years old.  But given that there was several decades'
worth of wear, I do think the hard hit and fast spinning aggravated the
situation.   Either way, good to have the starter gone through...as Darrell
Ratliff pointed out, I don't expect to encounter that particular problem
again.
