Ralph,

I never see my posts anymore, but occasionally I know that it made the list by comments in later posts.

Hi Dean
I hesitated to even reply since they never seem to make it to the list
lately but I guess its typing practice if nothing else.
I've had the same problem as you with the gear grinding Cockshutt 50 on
12 volts. I don't really think 12 volts is to blame
as this tractor used to occasionally grind the starter gear when it was
still on 6 volts. My 40 has always been 6 volt and
even it occasionally grinds the starter gear if the engine stops with
the ring gear in the bad spot.
We had the 50's ring gear reversed years ago when the engine was out for
repair. Simple job to just heat the ring gear and
watch it drop off the flywheel. It helped for a few years but its back
to grinding bad again . It only takes a couple of turns to
start on 12 volts but trying to hit a good spot on the ring gear is a
real challenge now.
Other than the engagement I have never had a problem with 12 volts on a
6 volt starter. Two old IH trucks spin the 6 volt
starters quickly and start way better than they did on 6. No engagement
problems at all.
Hope to see this show up on the list but not holding my breath.

Ralph in Sask.
