Spencer:
In the current economic situation, I don't know of any young folks under
40 who can have the time and money to be involved with our hobby. It
takes a large yard or acreage, a truck and trailer or access to one,
knowledge about how to haul large things, an understanding wife who does
not need someone at her beck and call every minute of the day.
Kids who want to learn about things from Dad would sure help. The
number of farm kids who might be interested in the old tractors are
dwindling.
After 40, the kids are old enough to not need supervising every minute,
a larger house or one in the suburbs is the place to live, The job does
not demand so much of your time, etc... I really think that about 40
yrs old is when a person gets to the place they can devote time and
money to a hobby.
A lot of the problem with getting younger folks interested in our work,
is that there are no shop classes in high school anymore. Our kids are
taught theory, but not how to use that theory..

I do know you are one of the most generous, kind and helpful people I've met on the list so your success in the face of obstacles surprises me not one little bit. Half of us wouldn't have engines that run at Portland if it wasn't for you.
