Liking old iron is the only prerequisite!
What type of farm? If there is one thing I have learned here is that farming
practices vary greatly from region to region. You'll have 3-4 guys
discussing something completely oblivious that nobody else has a clue what
they are talking about. Such was the case last year when we were talking
about planting potatoes, and some of the guys disclosed you have to pack
bedded rows down in their area. Around here, that is insane talk. I still
can't wrap my mind around needing headlights to run a hay baler like Cecil
does. The humidity here will send you to the house before supper gets cold,
much less dark outside.
Speaking of having chickens, I got a guy that buys wheat straw from me. He's
from Kansas but lives in NC now. Has his own business that involves an
emerging technology. His dad is a farmer back in Kansas. Guy bought a house
with acreage and raises chickens to sell the eggs and is expecting some cows
in about a week that he intends to raise and butcher to sell the meat. He
certainly doesn't need to do this, just does it because he wants to. You can
take the boy off the farm, but you'll never take the farm out of the boy!
