Update on the steamer bounce:

Two informants at opposite end of the earth report the following:

Steamer hasn't got a diff as such, only drives off one wheel with a
removable pin
locking the other wheel in place. So bounce probably caused by lack of
differential but also probably torque build up.

and

Steam traction engine differentials.
Pictures halfway down page of main input gear with spur gears, just below
is the
outer side mitre gear.

The differential is a flat pack that fits on one side of the engine,
between the
wheel and body. That is where drive from crankshaft passes down to the
continuous
single rear axle. Far side wheel is fixed to the axle which is locked to
inner side
of diff output gear. The diff side wheel is free to turn on the axle, but
connects
with pins to outside diff gear wheel. Pins can push in to lock the diff.
Pins can be
withdrawn to free either wheel from axle/diff, used when the diff is locked.

Hats off to the old-time engineers!

It is good to have work. It is even better to be *able* to work
