Paul,

Most everything I've found is the OS will be available for free until 
the end of life of the device. As usual clear as mud. I suspect the gain 
for M$ will be a subscription model for Office and other value added 
packages. Additionally lowered costs trying to maintain older versions 
of the OS. That means when you buy a new machine you get the new version 
of the OS which is how most people upgrade.

A few months will tell us for certain.
