One major problem with diesel engines is that they naturally make a lot of
NOx, substantially more than a correctly tuned gasoline engine. NOx is a
major pollutant responsible for smog, acid rain, and ozone in the
troposphere. Another major problem with diesel engines is that they
naturally make a lot of particulate emissions. Particulate inhalation
leads directly to a variety of fatal health conditions in humans.

Control of these two types of diesel pollution is a real challenge compared
with modern gasoline engines. You find "DPF" (diesel particulate filters)
to trap the particulates and periodically burn them to an ash that is
trapped and contained within the filter. And you find "DEF" (diesel
exhaust fluid, aka urea) fluid injection systems to control NOx. Plus, of
course, modern diesels are also equipped with catalytic converters like gas
engines to burn off the unburned hydrocarbons.
