Navistar didn't have a problem it was Ford dictating what they would pay and didn't want to pay navistar for the needed improvements. That's why the lawsuit between ford and navistar. Ford cheapened them up to the point of failure and wanted navistar to pay for their engineering mistakes.

I don't understand why US truck manufactures consistently feel the need
to reinvent the wheel. Ford's 7.3 was arguably one of the best engines
that Navistar produced. The same goes for the original Cummins diesel
in Dodge trucks. Why not just keep improving those engines. Find the
weak points, and improve them. Constantly coming out with under tested
new engines is a causing them a lot of grief and unhappy customers.

It's prettying much just wishful thinking by ford owners hoping for a good diesel. And on a side note they will help you with your spelling by correcting and letting you know there is no "g" in Cummins. Stock torque this year is 900 ft lbs with a pretty good rumor that next year it will be 1000 ft lbs! And U.S. dodge owners thought we had problems with the transmissions now.
